An intermediate magnitude 4.0 earthquake was reported in the morning near Kisarazu, Kisarazu Shi, Chiba, Japan.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Tuesday, September 9th, 2025, at 8:53 am local time at an intermediate depth of 70. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.3. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.0.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Sodegaura (pop. 64,900) located 2 km from the epicenter, Kisarazu (pop. 136,200) 6 km away, Kimitsu (pop. 83,100) 13 km away, Ichihara (pop. 283,500) 15 km away, Chiba (pop. 979,800) 25 km away, Mobara (pop. 88,300) 27 km away, Urayasu (pop. 171,400) 30 km away, Narashino (pop. 176,200) 32 km away, Yokohama (pop. 3,761,600) 32 km away, and Tokyo (pop. 8,336,600) 43 km away.
