The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported a magnitude 4.8 quake in the Philippines near Laoang, Northern Samar, Eastern Visayas, only 9 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Friday, September 26th, 2025, at 6:48 am local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Cabatuan (pop. 2,400) located 38 km from the epicenter, Cabodiongan (pop. 3,000) 39 km away, Mapanas (pop. 3,600) 42 km away, Palapag (pop. 8,300) 42 km away, Laoang (pop. 16,700) 48 km away, Gamay (pop. 9,100) 51 km away, Pambujan (pop. 10,800) 56 km away, and Catarman (pop. 47,400) 87 km away.

A very shallow magnitude 3.7 earthquake was reported around noon near Hilo, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Thursday, September 25th, 2025, at 12:21 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 4.1 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.8 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Volcano (pop. 2,600) located 9 miles from the epicenter, and Fern Forest (pop. 1,200) 12 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Eden Roc (pop. 1,400) located 14 miles from the epicenter, Mountain View (pop.
