Just 23 minutes ago, a 3.9-magnitude earthquake struck near San José, Upala, Provincia de Alajuela, Costa Rica. The tremor was recorded early afternoon on Saturday, October 4th, 2025, at 3:10 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 10. km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Tilaran (pop. 7,300) located 16 km from the epicenter, Bijagua (pop. 1,100) 19 km away, and Canas (pop. 20,300) 26 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Upala (pop. 4,200) located 33 km from the epicenter, San José (pop. 31,400) 44 km away, Quesada (pop. 27,300) 64 km away, and Chacarita (pop. 26,400) 72 km away.
