A magnitude 5.3 earthquake near Jipijapa, Provincia de Manabi, Ecuador, was reported only 8 minutes ago by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter around noon on Friday, September 5th, 2025, at 12:42 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Jipijapa (pop. 35,900) located 42 km from the epicenter, and Pajan (pop. 9,200) 47 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Sucre (pop. 15,300) located 61 km from the epicenter, Montecristi (pop. 18,400) 67 km away, Salinas (pop. 43,900) 67 km away, La Libertad (pop. 75,900) 69 km away, Pedro Carbo (pop. 23,400) 72 km away, Manta (pop. 264,300) 76 km away, and Guayaquil (pop. 2,723,700) 125 km away.
