A magnitude 5.2 earthquake near Meiktila, Meiktila District, Mandalay, Myanmar (Burma), was reported only 12 minutes ago by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 36. km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Friday, April 11th, 2025, at 10:29 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from Thailand’s Earthquake Observation Division (TMD) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Meiktila (pop. 177,400) located 49 km from the epicenter, Kyaukse (pop. 50,500) 59 km away, Yamethin (pop. 59,900) 74 km away, Taunggyi (pop. 160,100) 87 km away, Taunggyi (pop. 160,100) 87 km away, Sagaing (pop. 78,700) 93 km away, Myingyan (pop. 141,700) 100 km away, and Mandalay (pop. 1,208,100) 100 km away.
