An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 occurred only 6 minutes ago 54 km southeast of Mati, Philippines, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Mati, Davao Oriental, Davao, Philippines, in the evening on Friday, August 29th, 2025, at 9:30 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Pondaguitan (pop. 2,100) located 20 km from the epicenter, Nangan (pop. 3,400) 21 km away, Tibanbang (pop. 7,800) 28 km away, Sigaboy (pop. 8,000) 33 km away, Batobato (pop. 9,700) 46 km away, Mati (pop. 105,900) 54 km away, and Lupon (pop. 27,200) 57 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Malita (pop. 41,100) located 77 km from the epicenter, Samal (pop. 43,500) 94 km away, and Davao City (pop. 1,776,900) 101 km away.
