An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred early evening on Wednesday, August 20th, 2025, at 6:46 pm local time near Yangon, West Yangon District, Myanmar (Burma), as reported by Thailand’s Earthquake Observation Division (TMD).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Thongwa (pop. 52,500) located 74 km from the epicenter, Syriam (pop. 69,400) 86 km away, Kayan (pop. 40,300) 90 km away, Yangon (pop. 4,477,600) 94 km away, Kanbe (pop. 58,100) 97 km away, Kyaikkami (pop. 48,100) 97 km away, Mawlamyine (pop. 438,900) 112 km away, and Thaton (pop. 123,700) 118 km away.
