A magnitude 2.7 earthquake near Basel, Basel-Stadt, Kanton Basel-Stadt, Switzerland, was reported just 12 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies monitoring seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 20. km beneath the epicenter in the early afternoon on Saturday, October 3rd, 2026, at 3:36 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France’s Military Applications Division – Earth and Environmental Science (CEA), which listed the quake at magnitude 3.1.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people or caused any damage. In Fullinsdorf (pop. 4,400, 3 km away), Liestal (pop. 12,800, 3 km away), Muttenz (pop. 16,900, 10 km away), Riehen (pop. 20,000, 13 km away), Reinach (pop. 19,200, 13 km away), Basel (pop. 177,600, 16 km away), Allschwil (pop. 18,200, 18 km away), Olten (pop. 18,400, 19 km away), Aarau (pop. 21,500, 24 km away), and Bern (pop. 121,600, 66 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
