Just 19 minutes ago, a magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck near Cochrane, Alberta, Canada. The tremor was recorded early on Friday morning, October 16, 2026, at 4:46 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 5.2 miles below the surface.
The event was reported by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which also listed the quake at magnitude 4.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but it was probably felt by many people as light vibrations in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Banff (pop. 8,300), located 20 miles from the epicenter; Canmore (pop. 14,000), 26 miles away; and Lake Louise (pop. 1000), 31 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Sundre (pop. 2,700), located 43 miles from the epicenter; Cochrane (pop. 32,200), 46 miles away; and Airdrie (pop. 90,000), 62 miles away.
