A magnitude 4.9 earthquake near Padang, Kota Padang, Provinsi Sumatera Barat, Indonesia, was reported only 6 minutes ago by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter early morning on Wednesday, December 10th, 2025, at 2:48 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Solok (pop. 73,400) located 20 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Padang (pop. 909,000) located 39 km from the epicenter, Sijunjung (pop. 27,800) 44 km away, Padangpanjang (pop. 58,600) 67 km away, Pariaman (pop. 92,200) 76 km away, Bukittinggi (pop. 121,000) 83 km away, and Payakumbuh (pop. 139,600) 85 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow
