The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 5.3 quake in Panama near Santiago, Santiago District, Provincia de Veraguas, 33 minutes ago. The earthquake struck in the early afternoon on Friday, October 9th, 2026, at 3:42 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 10. km. The magnitude and other quake parameters may still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network RaspberryShake, which also listed the quake at magnitude 5.3. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Sona (pop. 7,700), located 34 km from the epicenter; San Francisco (pop. 1,900), 36 km away; Rio de Jesus (pop. 1,100), 42 km away; Las Palmas (pop. 1,300), 44 km away; Santiago (pop. 45,400), 66 km away; Canto del Llano (pop. 7,900), 69 km away; and David (pop. 82,000), 132 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update the magnitude and depth if they change and follow
