An intermediate magnitude 5.3 earthquake was reported around noon near Sofifi, Kota Tidore Kepulauan, North Maluku, Indonesia.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Sunday, November 23rd, 2025, at 12:20 pm local time at an intermediate depth of 89.10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Maba (pop. 12,600) located 44 km from the epicenter, Tobelo (pop. 34,200) 75 km away, Sofifi (pop. 36,200) 78 km away, Galela (pop. 8,800) 93 km away, and Ternate (pop. 204,900) 93 km away.
