An earthquake of magnitude 2.8 occurred only 28 minutes ago 30 km west of Karlovy Vary, Czechia, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 3.60 km beneath the epicenter near Karlovy Vary, Okres Karlovy Vary, Karlovarsky kraj, Czechia, early evening on Thursday, January 1st, 2026, at 6:13 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 2.8 as well. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 2.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Luby (pop. 2,500) located 4 km from the epicenter.

A very shallow magnitude 3.3 earthquake was reported in the afternoon near Karlovy Vary, Okres Karlovy Vary, Karlovarsky kraj, Czechia.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Thursday, January 1st, 2026, at 5:38 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 5. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
