An earthquake of magnitude 3.9 occurred early morning on Sunday, July 27th, 2025, at 5:09 am local time near Homer, Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate depth of 66 miles. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.9 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.9.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Pedro Bay (pop. 42, 33 miles away), Anchor Point (pop. 1,900, 51 miles away), Diamond Ridge (pop. 1,200, 59 miles away), and Homer (pop. 5,500, 59 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
