A magnitude 3.2 earthquake near Le Puy-en-Velay, Haute-Loire, Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes, France, was reported only 6 minutes ago by France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), considered the main national agency monitoring seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 5. km beneath the epicenter early Thursday morning, October 22nd, 2026, at 6:14 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage but was probably felt by many people as light vibrations in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Chanaleilles (pop. 250), located 7 km from the epicenter; Saugues (pop. 2,300), 11 km away; and Saint-Chely-d’Apcher (pop. 4,200), 16 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Langeac (pop. 4,000), located 22 km from the epicenter, and Saint-Flour (pop. 7,500), 30 km away. In Le Puy-en-Velay (pop. 22,700, 39 km away), Brioude (pop. 7,500, 43 km away), and Mende (pop. 14,800,
