A shallow magnitude 5.4 earthquake was reported early morning near Sinabang, Simeulue Regency, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province, Indonesia.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Tuesday, April 8th, 2025, at 2:49 am local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.4 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Sinabang (pop. 15,000) located 69 km from the epicenter, Lahewa (pop. 24,500) 85 km away, Singkil (pop. 46,800) 104 km away, and Gunungsitoli (pop. 136,700) 122 km away.
