A magnitude 4.6 earthquake near Tobelo, North Halmahera Regency, North Maluku, Indonesia, was reported only 7 minutes ago by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Indonesia. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth of 71. km beneath the epicenter early morning on Friday, January 2nd, 2026, at 4:35 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Galela (pop. 8,800) located 72 km from the epicenter, Tobelo (pop. 34,200) 98 km away, and Daruba (pop. 23,600) 112 km away.
