An earthquake of magnitude 3.2 occurred only 16 minutes ago 9 miles southwest of Richmond, Kentucky, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 5.5 miles beneath the epicenter near Richmond, Madison County, Kentucky, USA, around noon on Sunday, December 28th, 2025, at 12:47 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.2 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.2.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Lancaster (pop. 3,900) located 8 miles from the epicenter, Richmond (pop. 33,500) 9 miles away, Nicholasville (pop. 29,800) 16 miles away, Danville (pop. 16,700) 18 miles away, and Lexington (pop. 320,300) 22 miles away. In Winchester (pop. 18,400, 26 miles away), Lexington-Fayette (pop. 314,500, 26 miles away), and Frankfort (pop. 28,400, 44 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
