A magnitude 5.2 earthquake near Baghlan, Baghlani Jadid District, Afghanistan, was reported just 19 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, one of the key international agencies monitoring seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 49.60 km beneath the epicenter early Thursday morning, October 1st, 2026, at 5:29 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake may be revised over the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which also listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include India’s National Center for Seismology (NCS) at magnitude 5.3, the citizen-seismograph network RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.3, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the epicentral area. It should not have caused significant damage, apart from objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Baghlan (pop. 108,400), located 8 km from the epicenter; Pul-e Khumri (pop. 56,400), 18 km away; Nahrin (pop. 22,400), 32 km away; Hukumati
