A magnitude 2.8 earthquake near West Wyalong, Bland, New South Wales, Australia, was reported only 14 minutes ago by Geoscience Australia (GeoAu), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Australia. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 5.5 miles beneath the epicenter in the evening on Sunday, August 31st, 2025, at 8:46 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 2.9 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 2.9.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Alleena (pop. 57) located 5 miles from the epicenter, West Wyalong (pop. 3,300) 7 miles away, and Wyalong (pop. 650) 9 miles away. In Temora (pop. 4,600, 40 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
