A magnitude 5.0 earthquake near Manzanillo, Estado de Colima, Mexico, was reported only 19 minutes ago by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), considered one of the key international agencies monitoring seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter late at night on Thursday, October 1st, 2026, at 11:53 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Cuyutlan (pop. 1000), located 45 km from the epicenter; El Colomo (pop. 10,300), 50 km away; Ciudad de Armeria (pop. 15,900), 55 km away; Manzanillo (pop. 159,900), 56 km away; Tecoman (pop. 85,700), 60 km away; Cihuatlan (pop. 40,100), 72 km away; Ciudad de Villa de Alvarez (pop. 117,600), 97 km away; Colima (pop. 147,000), 97 km away;
