A moderately shallow magnitude 5.6 earthquake was reported early morning near Banga, South Cotabato, Soccsksargen, Philippines.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Wednesday, April 16th, 2025, at 5:42 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 30.70 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Maitum (pop. 8,500) located 43 km from the epicenter, Kiamba (pop. 11,000) 51 km away, and Lake Sebu (pop. 21,800) 74 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Surallah (pop. 31,100) located 89 km from the epicenter, Banga (pop. 58,900) 96 km away, Koronadal (pop. 195,400) 107 km away, and General Santos (pop. 697,300) 111 km away.

An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred only 8 minutes ago 94 km southwest of Banga, Philippines, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Banga, South Cotabato, Soccsksargen, Philippines, early morning on Wednesday, April 16th, 2025, at 5:42 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.8. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.2, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.3.

At 552 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm over Bozrah, or near Salem, moving east at 30 mph. HAZARD…Wind gusts up to 50 mph and pea size hail. SOURCE…Radar indicated. IMPACT…Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to outdoor objects is possible. Locations impacted include… Jewett City, Norwich, Colchester, Salem, Ledyard, Griswold, Lebanon, Preston, Lisbon, Sprague, Bozrah, Voluntown, Gales Ferry, Ledyard Center, and Montville.
