Just 10 minutes ago, a 3.2-magnitude earthquake struck near San Ramon, Contra Costa County, California, USA. The tremor was recorded in the afternoon on Thursday, January 1st, 2026, at 4:58 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 5.3 miles below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.2 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in San Ramon (pop. 76,100) located 2 miles from the epicenter, and Danville (pop. 44,400) 4 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Dublin (pop. 57,700) located 5 miles from the epicenter, Pleasanton (pop. 79,500) 9 miles away, Hayward (pop. 158,300) 10 miles away, Livermore (pop. 88,100) 12 miles away, and San Leandro (pop. 90,700) 12 miles away.
