A magnitude 3.7 earthquake near Hilo, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA, was reported just 4 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency monitoring seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 0.1 miles beneath the epicenter on the morning of Friday, October 2nd, 2026, at 7:55 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which also listed it as a magnitude 3.7 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
