Spain’s Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN) reported a magnitude 4.0 quake in Spain near Gasteiz / Vitoria, Araba / Álava, Basque Country, only 8 minutes ago. The earthquake hit after midnight on Monday, December 8th, 2025, at 12:10 am local time at a very shallow depth of 5. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.0 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Berrosteguieta (pop. 590) located 5 km from the epicenter, and Gasteiz / Vitoria (pop. 257,400) 7 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Miranda de Ebro (pop. 39,300) located 23 km from the epicenter, and Arrasate / Mondragón (pop. 22,000) 33 km away.
