A very shallow magnitude 3.7 earthquake was reported in the morning near Carson City, Carson City County, Nevada, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Saturday, December 27th, 2025, at 7:20 am local time at a very shallow depth of 1.4 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.8. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.8.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Yerington (pop. 3,100) located 14 miles from the epicenter, Silver Springs (pop. 5,300) 20 miles away, Fallon (pop. 8,500) 26 miles away, Dayton (pop. 9,000) 30 miles away, Fernley (pop. 19,400) 33 miles away, and Carson City (pop. 58,600) 39 miles away. In Sparks (pop. 96,100, 46 miles away), Reno (pop. 264,200, 49 miles away), Spanish Springs (pop. 15,100, 49

An earthquake of magnitude 6.7 occurred only 9 minutes ago 76 km southeast of Taipei, Taiwan, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 59.70 km beneath the epicenter near Taipei, Taipei City, Taiwan, late at night on Saturday, December 27th, 2025, at 11:05 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau (CWB) which listed the quake at magnitude 7.0. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 6.1, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 6.7.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Yilan (pop. 94,200) located 38 km from the epicenter, Xizhi (pop.
