An earthquake of magnitude 3.8 occurred just 8 minutes ago 31 miles southwest of Ely, Nevada, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake struck at a very shallow depth of 0.5 miles beneath the epicenter near Ely, White Pine County, Nevada, USA, on the morning of Tuesday, October 6th, 2026, at 8:34 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which also listed it as a magnitude 3.8 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage but was probably felt by many people as light vibrations in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Preston (pop. 78), located 16 miles from the epicenter; Lund (pop. 280), 20 miles away; and Ruth (pop. 440), 28 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Ely (pop. 4,100), located 31 miles from the epicenter, and McGill (pop. 1,100), 43 miles away.
