An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 occurred only 21 minutes ago 20 km northeast of Alexandroupoli, Greece, The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 5. km beneath the epicenter near Alexandroupoli, Evros, East Macedonia and Thrace, Greece, around noon on Wednesday, April 23rd, 2025, at 1:02 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS) at magnitude 5.5, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Nipsa (pop. 520) located 8 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Feres (pop. 5,400) located 18 km from the epicenter, Alexandroupoli (pop. 53,000) 20 km away, Sapes
