An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred just 14 minutes ago, 63 miles northeast of Akutan, Alaska, United States, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake struck at a moderately shallow depth of 22 miles beneath the epicenter near Akutan, Aleutians East, Alaska, USA, early on Thursday morning, October 1st, 2026, at 6:46 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network RaspberryShake, which also listed the quake at magnitude 5.0. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage but was probably felt by many people as a light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in False Pass (pop. 40), located 56 miles from the epicenter, and Akutan (pop. 1000), 63 miles away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update the magnitude and depth if they change and follow up if other significant news about the quake becomes available. If you’re in the area, please send
