A magnitude 4.9 earthquake near Warragul, Baw Baw, Victoria, Australia, was reported just 10 minutes ago by RaspberryShake’s citizen-seismograph network, considered the main national agency monitoring seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles beneath the epicenter on Tuesday morning, October 6, 2026, at 8:29 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Arawata (pop. 79), located 2 miles from the epicenter; Korumburra (pop. 4,300), 2 miles away; and Leongatha (pop. 5,400), 6 miles away.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Warragul (pop. 19,900), located 19 miles from the epicenter; Traralgon (pop. 26,900), 40 miles away; Frankston East (pop. 34,500), 44 miles away; Glen Waverly (pop. 42,600), 54 miles away; Balwyn North (pop. 21,300), 60 miles away; and Melbourne (pop. 5,350,700), 65 miles away.
