Advanced Manufacturing: Assistant/Associate Professor
Virginia Tech

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech seeks applications for multiple tenure track faculty positions at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, depending on experience and qualifications, in the broad area of advanced manufacturing with an anticipated start date of August 2027.

We seek candidates who will establish an internationally recognized research program in advanced manufacturing. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, advanced materials and materials processing; additive, hybrid, and emerging manufacturing processes; manufacturing robotics and automation, including autonomous self-driving laboratories; data-driven, intelligent, and autonomous manufacturing; computational design and digital manufacturing; human–machine interaction; point-of-care and distributed biomanufacturing; and future-generation manufacturing systems. The U.S. National Science Foundation today announced plans to launch a series of programs and initiatives to support the ambitious vision articulated in the White House report Science: A New Golden Age, the first comprehensive rethinking of the U.S. science and technology enterprise in the last 80+ years. These new programs and initiatives combined with the $1.5 billion in investments announced in August will help the agency improve how it evaluates and supports science, harness super intelligence to accelerate discovery, and invest in exceptional students and early-career researchers.

NSF is establishing an Office of Metascience to serve as a testbed for studying how scientific communities respond to novel review and funding mechanisms, applying those lessons learned to NSF programs to accelerate discovery. The office will operate with full transparency, sharing its experiments and findings with academia, industry, and philanthropy. A job announcement for the head of the Office of Metascience will be forthcoming.

In addition, both UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and NSF intend to build on the metascience principles that the United States has outlined in the “Kyoto Vision for a Golden Age of Science,” and that both agencies have articulated in, respectively, the “NSF Leadership in a New Golden Age of Science” memorandum and the UKRI Strategy 2026-31.

NSF is launching two Grand Research Challenge (GRC) prize competitions to facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration, attract nontraditional entrants, and form

The United States National Science Foundation (NSF) and United Kingdom Research and Innovation (UKRI) have long advanced knowledge through the ingenuity of our researchers and the institutions that enable them.

Both UKRI and NSF intend to build on the metascience principles that the United States have outlined in the Kyoto Vision for a Golden Age of Science, and that both agencies have articulated in, respectively, the “NSF Leadership in a New Golden Age of Science” memorandum and the UKRI Strategy 2026-31.

The NSF and UKRI will collaborate on metascience, to apply the experimental and analytical process of science to the funding, practice, and orchestration of our respective science and technology enterprises. The NSF and UKRI recognize that the methods by which research is funded, conducted, and evaluated can themselves be studied and improved, and we can learn from our respective programs, data, and institutional experience. We intend to explore metascience cooperation in areas including:

Measuring research productivity and impact;Improving research review and funding;Assessing how new methods and tools are used in research; andEnabling responsible analysis of metascience-relevant data.

The partnership between the NSF Office of Metascience and the UK Metascience Unit also supports the development of an international network of metascience units, which will bring together like-minded countries to exchange ideas, share best practices, and explore coordinated experiments and challenges regarding applied metascience.

In the coming months, NSF and UKRI
