Position Overview

This teaching-focused position will be responsible for delivering high-quality instruction across core areas of mechanical engineering, with an emphasis on design and manufacturing including capstone design courses, as well as at least one of thermal sciences, mechanics, or control systems. The successful candidate will contribute to curriculum development, foster experiential learning, and support student success in alignment with the shared values of Ohio State.

Performance Objectives

Teach undergraduate courses in engineering design, including capstone design courses. In addition, teaching courses in one or more core areas of mechanical engineering

The Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at the Florida A&M University-Florida State University College of Engineering is pleased to invite applications from highly qualified individuals for teaching faculty positions in the field of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering in Tallahassee, Florida. These positions are at the Teaching Faculty I level, but well-qualified candidates will be considered for a higher rank.

We are interested in candidates with backgrounds in Mechanical & Aerospace engineering who can teach graduate-level courses, including but not limited to Aerodynamics, Fluid Dynamics, Aerospace Propulsion, Aerospace Structures, Dynamics & Controls, and Mechanics & Materials. Other areas of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering will also be considered, particularly if they complement the department’s existing strengths.

Description of the project
Knowledge of the torque and torsional response of a maritime powertrain is important for emission-compliant control. Torque and torsional response are normally measured using strain gauges, dedicated torque sensors, or other instrumentation installed on the drivetrain. Torsional response can also be calculated if the external torsional forces acting on the powertrain are known, but measurements of this external forcing are rare in maritime powertrains. Instrumenting large maritime powertrains is also costly, and there is often not enough measured information available to fully determine the torsional response using conventional methods alone.

Unknown external forces and torsional response can instead be estimated using methods such as convex optimization or Kalman filtering. These torque estimation methods allow much more freedom in sensor placement and reduce the number of sensors needed to characterize the full torsional response of the powertrain.
