We estimate light-duty electric vehicles in the United States consumed 8% more electricity during the first six months of 2026 than in the last half of 2025 (2H25) in our Monthly Energy Review, down from the 13–24% growth seen in six-month periods in recent years. The slowing electric vehicle electricity consumption growth followed a decline in sales after U.S. federal tax credits expired in September 2025. Overall, U.S. light-duty electric vehicle electricity use has more than doubled since 1H23, totaling nearly 14 billion kilowatthours in 1H26.

A shallow magnitude 5.0 earthquake was reported in the early evening near Kupang, Kota Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia.
According to the citizen-seismograph network RaspberryShake, the quake struck on Wednesday, September 30th, 2026, at 7:55 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones because they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the epicentral area. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Kupang (pop. 442,800), located 13 km from the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Naisano Dua (pop. 2,300), located 56 km from the epicenter; Soe (pop. 40,200), 70 km away; Baa (pop. 1,300), 99 km away; and Kefamenanu (pop. 48,200), 112 km away.
