Thailand’s Earthquake Observation Division (TMD) reported a magnitude 5.2 quake in China near Mengla, Xishuangbanna Daizu Zizhizhou, Yunnan Sheng, only 11 minutes ago. The earthquake hit late at night on Monday, December 22nd, 2025, at 11:45 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Mengla (pop. 30,300) located 15 km from the epicenter, and Muang Sing (pop. 23,500) 47 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Muang Xay (pop. 25,000) located 82 km from the epicenter, and Jinghong (pop. 205,500) 113 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will

An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 occurred late at night on Monday, December 22nd, 2025, at 11:42 pm local time near Dumaguete, Negros Oriental, Central Visayas, Philippines, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.0 as well. A third agency, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Mantiquil (pop. 2,300) located 16 km from the epicenter, Sibulan (pop. 28,100) 20 km away, Dumaguete (pop. 113,500) 22 km away, Tanjay (pop. 82,600) 25 km away, and Santa Catalina (pop. 26,500) 27 km away.
