An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 occurred in the evening on Tuesday, December 30th, 2025, at 8:43 pm local time near Lhokseumawe, Kota Lhokseumawe, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province, Indonesia, as reported by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 7. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Bireun (pop. 47,700) located 54 km from the epicenter, and Lhokseumawe (pop. 196,100) 63 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Reuleuet (pop. 40,400) located 79 km from the epicenter, Meulaboh (pop. 64,600) 99 km away,
