Small tremor of magnitude 3.1 reported 21 km southeast of Murcia, Spain

An earthquake of magnitude 3.1 occurred early on Wednesday morning, September 30th, 2026, at 2:04 am local time near Murcia, Spain, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 5 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones because they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
A second report was later issued by Spain’s Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN), which also listed it as a magnitude 3.1 earthquake.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Pilar de la Horadada (pop. 21,400), located 11 km from the epicenter; San Pedro del Pinatar (pop. 23,700), 13 km away; and San Javier (pop. 31,400), 13 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Orihuela (pop. 101,300), located 19 km from the epicenter; Torre-Pacheco (pop. 35,600), 20 km away; Torrevieja (pop. 82,600), 21 km away; Murcia (pop. 472,000), 21 km away; and Molina de Segura (pop. 64,100), 31 km away.
