Japan was shaken near Miyazaki by a magnitude 5.3 earthquake just 9 minutes ago, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake struck at a moderately shallow depth of 35. km beneath the epicenter near Miyazaki, Japan, on the morning of Sunday, October 25th, 2026, at 8:59 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed the quake at magnitude 5.4.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Nichinan (pop. 51,200), located 36 km from the epicenter; Miyazaki (pop. 401,300), 38 km away; Shintomi (pop. 16,600), 46 km away; Honjo (pop. 18,400), 48 km away; Saito (pop. 29,300), 52 km away; Tsuma (pop. 34,300), 54 km away; Miyakonojo (pop. 161,100), 62 km away; and Nobeoka (pop. 119,500), 98 km away.
