A shallow magnitude 3.6 earthquake was reported early in the morning near Clermont-Ferrand, Puy-de-Dôme, Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes, France.
According to France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), the quake struck on Thursday, October 22nd, 2026, at 4:03 am local time, at a shallow depth of 13.06 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones because they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as a light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Job (pop. 1,100), located 6 km from the epicenter, and Montbrison (pop. 16,200), 31 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Issoire (pop. 16,000), located 33 km from the epicenter, Cournon-d’Auvergne (pop. 18,800), 40 km away, Cournon-d’Auvergne (pop. 18,800), 40 km away, Clermont-Ferrand (pop. 147,900), 50 km away, Roanne (pop. 39,800), 58 km away, and Saint-Etienne (pop. 176,300), 59 km away.
