A very shallow magnitude 5.2 earthquake was reported in the early evening near Ponta Delgada, Azores, Portugal.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake struck on Tuesday, October 20th, 2026, at 6:07 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 7. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the epicentral area. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Mosteiros (pop. 1,100), located 32 km from the epicenter; Relva (pop. 3,000), 47 km away; Arrifes (pop. 7,000), 47 km away; Arrifes (pop. 7,000), 47 km away; Sao Vicente (pop. 2,400), 47 km away; Ponta Delgada (pop. 20,100), 51 km away; Faja de Baixo (pop. 4,900), 52 km away; Rosto de Cao (pop.
