A magnitude 2.8 earthquake near Clermont-Ferrand, Puy-de-Dôme, Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes, France, was reported just 4 minutes ago by France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), considered the main national agency monitoring seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 5. km beneath the epicenter early on Thursday morning, October 22nd, 2026, at 2:14 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage but was probably felt by many people as a light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in La Chapelle-Agnon (pop. 440), located 1 km from the epicenter. In Issoire (pop. 16,000, 31 km away), Montbrison (pop. 16,200, 34 km away), Cournon-d’Auvergne (pop. 18,800, 35 km away), Cournon-d’Auvergne (pop. 18,800, 35 km away), Clermont-Ferrand (pop. 147,900, 45 km away), Chamalieres (pop. 20,300, 46 km away), and Riom (pop. 20,100, 49 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
