A magnitude 3.8 earthquake near Simi Valley, Ventura County, California, USA, was reported just 12 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency monitoring seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 6.6 miles beneath the epicenter on the evening of Tuesday, September 29th, 2026, at 8:00 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which also listed it as a magnitude 3.8 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Piru (pop. 2,100), located 2 miles from the epicenter; Simi Valley (pop. 126,800), 9 miles away; Valencia (pop. 148,500), 9 miles away; Moorpark (pop. 36,100), 10 miles away; Santa Clarita (pop. 182,400), 13 miles away; Thousand Oaks (pop. 129,300), 16 miles away; Camarillo (pop. 67,600), 20 miles away; and Oxnard (pop. 207,300), 27 miles away.
