An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred only 11 minutes ago 70 km northeast of Santiago, Chile, The National Seismological Center (Centro Sismológico Nacional, CSN) of the University of Chile reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 127. km beneath the epicenter near Santiago, Provincia de Santiago, Santiago Metropolitan, Chile, early morning on Tuesday, December 16th, 2025, at 4:42 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.3 earthquake.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Los Andes (pop. 56,900) located 46 km from the epicenter, and San Esteban (pop. 17,100) 46 km away. In Colina (pop. 146,200, 55 km away), San Felipe (pop. 59,300, 60 km away), Penalolen (pop. 241,600, 64 km away), Quilicura (pop. 210,400, 68 km away), Renca (pop. 147,200, 70 km away), Santiago (pop. 4,837,300, 70 km away), and Puente Alto (pop. 568,100, 80 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
