A shallow magnitude 4.7 earthquake was reported early evening near Kefamenanu, North Central Timor Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia.
According to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, the quake hit on Thursday, June 12th, 2025, at 7:26 pm local time at a shallow depth of 26. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kefamenanu (pop. 48,200) located 13 km from the epicenter, Pante Makasar (pop. 4,700) 20 km away, Atambua (pop. 82,200) 49 km away, and Soe (pop. 40,200) 64 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Suai (pop. 21,500) located 82 km from the epicenter, Naisano Dua (pop. 2,300) 86 km away, and Maliana (pop. 22,000) 87 km away.
