An earthquake of magnitude 5.8 occurred just 9 minutes ago, 78 km southwest of Yonakuni, Japan, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake struck at a very shallow depth of 1.20 km beneath the epicenter near Yonakuni, Yaeyama-gun, Okinawa, Japan, in the early afternoon on Wednesday, September 30th, 2026, at 2:00 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network RaspberryShake, which also listed it as a magnitude 5.8 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.7, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency at magnitude 5.7, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.8.
Generally, quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency, and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that arrive after the first one often proving more accurate.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
