An intermediate magnitude 4.6 earthquake was reported around noon near Banda Aceh, Kota Banda Aceh, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province, Indonesia.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake struck on Thursday, October 8th, 2026, at 1:45 pm local time and at an intermediate depth of 97.53 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Thailand’s Earthquake Observation Division (TMD), at magnitude 4.1; Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, at magnitude 4.2; and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, at magnitude 4.2.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Banda Aceh (pop. 255,000), located 62 km from the epicenter, and Sabang (pop. 42,100), 76 km away.
