We estimate light-duty electric vehicles in the United States consumed 8% more electricity during the first six months of 2026 than in the last half of 2025 (2H25) in our Monthly Energy Review, down from the 13–24% growth seen in six-month periods in recent years. The slowing electric vehicle electricity consumption growth followed a decline in sales after U.S. federal tax credits expired in September 2025. Overall, U.S. light-duty electric vehicle electricity use has more than doubled since 1H23, totaling nearly 14 billion kilowatthours in 1H26.

The SBE Directorate Head is responsible for directing and supervising SBE’s organizational structure and effectiveness, as well as the effectiveness of all organizational units and leading and implementing in accordance with the NSF Strategic Plan and Agency priorities.

The SBE Directorate Head is responsible for Directorate operations spanning all research, engineering, STEM education, research infrastructure, innovation, and other priority areas. The incumbent works collaboratively with the Chief of Business Operations.

This position serves as the NSF Director’s principal leader and advisor in matters relating to the Directorate’s purview. The incumbent is responsible for formulating long-range plans, annual programs and priorities, and research policy, within the framework of statutory and National Science Board (NSB) authority.
