A magnitude 4.6 earthquake occurred early Thursday evening, October 8, 2026, at 7:59 pm local time near Masohi, Kabupaten Maluku Tengah, Maluku, Indonesia, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones because they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which also listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, which recorded a magnitude of 4.4, and the citizen-seismograph network RaspberryShake, which recorded a magnitude of 4.6.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Masohi (pop. 36,400), located 99 km from the epicenter, and Amahai (pop. 47,700), 106 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update the magnitude and depth if they change and follow up if other significant news about the quake becomes available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via
