The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 5.8 quake in Guatemala near Huehuetenango, Municipio de Huehuetenango, Departamento de Huehuetenango, only 9 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early afternoon on Friday, November 28th, 2025, at 2:06 pm local time at an intermediate depth of 143.80 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.8 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) at magnitude 5.6, France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.0, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Comitancillo (pop. 59,500) located 45 km from the epicenter, Malacatan (pop. 92,800) 50 km away, Jacaltenango (pop. 37,200) 51 km away, Huehuetenango (pop. 79,400) 64 km away, Soloma (pop. 49,000) 75 km away, Coatepeque (pop.
