A shallow magnitude 3.3 earthquake was reported in the morning near Al Hoceima, Al-Hoceima, Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima, Morocco.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Tuesday, December 9th, 2025, at 7:05 am local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by Spain’s Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN), which listed it as a magnitude 3.3 earthquake as well. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 3.3.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Al Hoceima (pop. 395,600) located 36 km from the epicenter, Tirhanimine (pop. 55,800) 38 km away, and Imzouren (pop. 40,000) 41 km away. In Bni Bouayach (pop. 20,000, 44 km away), Ben Taieb (pop. 15,600, 51 km away), Beni Enzar (pop. 61,800, 70 km away), and Nador (pop. 176,600, 74 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
