A magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Valdez, Chugach, Alaska, USA, was reported only 7 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 9.3 miles beneath the epicenter in the morning on Saturday, July 19th, 2025, at 11:34 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Tatitlek (pop. 88) located 8 miles from the epicenter, and Valdez (pop. 3,900) 24 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Cordova (pop. 2,200) located 46 miles from the epicenter.

If you felt it, report it through our site or app right now!
